In network marketing, you hear a lot about the “best MLM lead.” But what does that really mean?

Of course, if you are going to spend all of your effort and time on generating leads, you want fresh MLM leads who will help you grow your company. So what qualities should you be looking for, what makes a lead good versus bad?

I’ve given a lot of thought to the subject and here it is–my top 4 qualities that the best MLM leads have:

1. Loyalty

Loyalty is a quality you want your people to have; but it can be a pretty rare commodity. After all, it’s tough when you spend your time training and developing a prospect, only to have them decide to go elsewhere, or even go to work for your competition.

Loyalty’s a hard one to assess, but obviously, if your prospect has a checkered work history, you can bet he won’t be around for the long run.

2. Dedication and Drive

People get into home based businesses for the wrong reason, a lot of the time. Many people have the mistaken idea that they can slide by with doing less work once they begin a home based career.

Obviously, that theory is dead wrong, so don’t hire the slackers.

Find the people who have real dedication and drive–they’ll still be around in a month, you know what I mean?

3. Self-Starter

As an entrepreneur, you have enough to handle without worrying about whiny prospects. You don’t have the time to do a lot of hand-holding and baby sitting when you are trying to grow your company.

So find the people who are self-starters, who don’t require a lot of counseling to get going in the business. They are the ones who will help your company grow so that you can attend to other areas of your business, which, rightfully, require your constant supervision.

4. Sales Skills

This one should be obvious, but it’s amazing how many people neglect it. Your MLM prospects should have some kind of background in sales. In fact, aim for those top-tier candidates with a proven track record.

Don’t get stuck recruiting friends and family members who’ve never sold a thing in their life.

Your business is your business, and you need professionals to help you build a team and become financially free.

I really like blogging, and over time I have turned my blog into a premium MLM lead generator. You can do it too, especially if you enjoy writing.

Many bloggers make the critical mistake of blogging just for the sake of keeping their blogs current.

Never update unless you have something to say, and since you need to update on a frequent basis, make sure you have something to say before you get started.

Many bloggers update 1-3 times a week; some even update daily. It doesn’t really matter how often, as long as you are consistent and always have something relevant to say.

Keep It Professional

A lot of people make the mistake of getting too casual with their blogs, and they mix business with pleasure.

The beauty of blogging is that you can afford to be casual; in fact, the best blogs are. Just don’t be tempted to take that too far.

Keep your personal life, political views, and controversial opinions for your personal blog. It’s too easy to offend or put off potential MLM leads by offering opinions on current events.

If you stick with your profession, you’ll have plenty to talk about and you won’t run the risk of offending anyone.

There’s a really good reason why you need to have a network marketing strategy before you ever go into business, and it’s this: you like to eat, right?

Once you have set your goals, you will develop a network marketing strategy that helps you reach them. It’s as simple as that, but most entrepreneurs never take that first step.

Without any kind of focus, your marketing efforts will be aimless, or even meaningless, because you’ll be frittering everything away. Focus your efforts on a defined goal, and it’s amazing what you can accomplish!

Try marketing without a defined goal, and like most small business owners, you’ll be back on the street in a year looking for a J.O.B.

Why buy MLM leads? I have no idea!

In fact, I strongly oppose buying these types of lists, having done so myself a few times. I got burned and I don’t want the same to happen to you.

Let me explain my arguments against purchasing these lists.

The Leads May Be Outdated

When you buy an MLM leads list, you are purchasing a list of names of people who (at one time or another) expressed an interest in operating a home based business.

You won’t know when they expressed this interest, or to whom, or anything about the situation. All you will know is that the people on your list could possibly be interested in what you have to offer.

Unfortunately, most of the leads on your list will have moved on by the time you get to them. Either they have joined another opportunity, or they’ve stopped being interested, or they were never fully invested in the process to begin with.

Because you don’t know the specifics of how they sought out a home based business opportunity, you have no way of knowing who’s still worth investing your time in and who’s not.

The Leads Unnecessarily Limit Your Choices

Another argument against MLM mailing lists is that they unnecessarily limit you to just the names on the page.

You are basically paying someone else to tell you about possible candidates, but you don’t know what their criteria are for choosing these prospects. You are literally placing the future of your company in someone else’s hands!

It’s much smarter to seize control of your own network marketing strategy and build your leads on your own.

Don’t limit yourself to leads that other people select; decide how you want to build and promote your company and go from there.

There’s no reason not to trust your own judgment, and a lot of reasons to be wary of people who make their living selling off people’s names.
